Robert: Not sure here, what I put in is exactly what you are trying.
The M goes on the =FILE> line, and the A/B goes either on another File line or the Bottom line (B), or on the last data line of a file group (A).
It certainly doesn't just move the =FILE> line

Hi ! I find the Medit M usefull also i prefer the now working FM CUT approach and editing the CLIP data and save as FLIST . You have to know that A can only be placed on Last Data Line of a file or Top of Data ( Robert: Use B if all data lines excluded ) B can only be placed on =FILE Line or Bottom of Data . I noticed however that if =FILE is moved that it is marked as Modified ( =FILE* shown after RESET cmd , Status bar updated immediately ) . SAVE COND can be used to save only that moved file and reset modified to get modified order of files back on restart with OPT Re-Open last file(s) at start . George: Is there a need to mark moved file as modified ? To be on save side in case of crash you should create a FLIST with modified order . Since FAV cmd not allowed in MEDIT session here a macro to create flist from =FILE lines . MFILE.macro (601 B) George: There is a problem as Robert described it . I X all lines used HIDE ON and shuffled the first 3 files around with B and one A after Top of Data line and ended up with missplaced =FILE Line . Here the picture There seems to be no problem if there are no EXCLUDED lines .

MUEH: No, it shouldn't mark it as modified just because it moved, in fact the logic tries to save the current modified status and restore it. I'll check further into that.
I hadn't considered HIDE, it means you can only move to the top or bottom since there's no place to put the A/B on the inner FILE lines. More checking to do.

George: JFYI : B can be used with HIDE ON since it's valid on =FILE Line and Bottom of Data .

Robert: MUEH: OK, the modified problem has been corrected - the modified state will be retained around the move. As well, the misplaced lines when excluded is corrected.
A/B Rules: A can go on Top-of-Data, or the last data line (or excluded marker) of a file segment B can go on Bottom-of-Data or another =FILE> line
I'll post a replacement Beta
