Back in the early days of Cathode Ray Tube display technology there was no lower case and green letters on a black background were deemed best for readability with minimum eyestrain and best to not burn out the phosphor coating on the display. Veteran mainframe users got used to that, and the look persists right into the default DOS Prompt in Windows, but on a flat screen I prefer colored text on a white background.
