Stefan: I've never used the Windows Sync Center (never had a need) so did some browsing. Found it quite confusing, everything is geared to the "How to setup Sync'ing" and nothing about actual use.
How does it work offline? Does it simulate your network drive? i.e. if online it's drive X: does it still appear as drive X: when offline?
Hi George,
To answer your question - in short - basically yes. The local/offline copies are stored in C:\WINDOWS\CSC (access limited to SYSTEM only).
I had the same trouble finding useful info. but have since located this, albeit dated, explanation to how Windows Sync Centre works...
helgeklein.com/blog/2012/04/windows-7-offline-files-survival-guide/Initial research suggested that whenever the network path S:\Docs\Spflite is accessed, Windows will access the network-based copy, if available, or use the local/offline copy, if the network is unavailable. Copies are checked/resync'ed periodically according to policy setting (policy doesn't say what interval applies to Windows 10)
However the above article suggests that if
network resource IS AVAILABLE
- Local/offline copy is sync'ed at login time
- Read I/O is directed to local/offline copy (if in sync), else network copy
- Write I/O is applied to network copy and local/offline copy (if in sync)
- Copies are checked/resync'ed periodically according to policy setting (policy doesn't say what interval applies to Windows 10)
Hence I assumed that under these circumstances, any periodic sync would always be
from NAS
to client, as there would be no need to sync from client to NAS.
If so, having sync enabled on
one client should be safe. I just need to ensure after working offline that no other client is accessing the CFG file when I reconnect to the network. Any potential conflict between the two 'versions' is then resolved by my specified conflict resolution (which is set to 'the offline copy wins').
But I stupidly enabled two clients for WSC sync!. I expect the periodic sync from one client, replacing the CFG file on the NAS, causes issues the next time the other client reads or writes the CFG.
Hence my question about whether the database used by the CFG supports/manages concurrent access from...
- ... SPFLite executing on multiple clients AND/OR
- ... merely multiple copies of SPFLite executing on a single client OR
- ... neither (hopefully not)
Hope this makes some sense.
