I'm sure I'm way out of touch, but I want to throw out the idea anyway. Call it brainstorming. Will it ever be feasible/desirable to support a Linux variant?

I thought I recall that it may be an option IF / WHEN the POWERBASIC programming language would release a linux version.
If you do a search on POWERBASIC and LINUX you'll see some discussions on the powerbasic website, but they are pretty old and not any current activity.
OTOH, I've been playing around with the HYBRID XE editor which has source which can be compiled and run in LINUX.
I should add that I would be interested in seeing a native LINUX version of SPF-LITE.

Hi,
I installed SPFLite on OpenSUSE 13 under Wine without any problem. Works fine. Installing on Ubuntu 12 gave some problems in the fonts area, but that has nothing to do with SPFLite itself.

Hi Everyone,
A long term alternative is being tackled by one of the SPFLite users who's retiring and, like me, wanted something to do. So he is starting work on a Java based SPFLite solution. Obviously there is no time frame right now, no assurance it will ever see the light of day, but he seems sincere in his desire to do this.
I tried starting a Java version a few years ago, but gave up in frustration with Java and its poor documentation and totally bewildering array of packages. I also found the Java user community groups to be most unfriendly to newcomers.
However, the person involved here is a thoroughly knowledgeable Java developer, so that aspect is not a problem.

Hi, I was browsing forum stuff and hit this one again.
I have tested the latest version of SPFLite under Wine under Ubuntu and it runs surprisingly well. My Ubuntu system is itself running under Virtual Box, so performance gets hit by that as well. But considering Spflite -> Wine -> Ubuntu -> VBox -> Windows it was perfectly usable. Native *NIX and WINE would be a lot better.
If you try this, add a command line operand of -WINE to SPFLite. This suppresses some ToolTip Help pop-ups which did not seem to be handled too well by WINE. Other than that, just install WINE, and run the SPFLiteSetup.EXE program. You will have a standard SPFLite Icon created and away you go. There are a very few minor items not handled well, like the Status Bar, but basic editor operations all seem fine.

Nowadays one can run Linux under Windoze and, as long as the SPFlite path is in your Windoze path environment variable you can kick off SPFLite from the bash command line. You have to specify the full name i.e. 'spflite.exe' not just 'spflite'. (No quotes of course and it appears to be case-agnostic).
For more details search for 'windows subsystem for linux'.

nicc: Thanks, I'd never known about the Windows support before.
