Hi,
This area is intended for questions and discussions related to the normal "How do I ..." and "Is there a way to ..." type questions. SPFLite has added many commands and functions over the normal command set of ISPF, and sometimes it is not obvious that there are now better and simpler ways to do things than in 'the good old days'. Let's help each other make the most of the tools available.

My function keys (pf-keys) seem to be mapped as I'd like them, but they don't do anything. Is there a problem with my keyboard? Is there something I should do to make them work?

Lin:
You mean you can see the PF values correctly in the KEYMAP display? And they don't work?
If you can PgUp and PgDown successfully, go to KEYMAP and display how those keys are defined. They should say simply UP and DOWN.
Check the ones's you've set. Are they formatted the same way? When you hit one of your keys, do you get an error Beep, Or a visible blinking in the upper left screen corner? If so, it's a sign the key is incorrect somehow.
Check these out. If still no-go, send your SPFLite.KBD file to support@SPFLite.com and I'll have a look to see what's wrong.

Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU. Mapping looked correct. But I more carefully looked at the keyboard, and there's an f-lock key. That worked. What does the electrician ask first? .... "Are you sure it's plugged in?" Once every year, or two, or three, I try my hand at IBM assembler. Things don't come as easily as they once did. But I used z390 asm a year ago, and after a bit, I like it. If I put z390 and spflite together, I'm as happy a camper as I can manage these days. Well, as happy as I can manage if I cannot go hang gliding. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYKeeA3YCIA

It's a microsoft natural ergonomic 4000 v1.0 keyboard. I got it because it reduces the angle at my wrist to put my fingers on the keys. I've a friend who comes over occasionally and helps me when I get in trouble, and he absolutely hates it.
Uncle, uncle. I'm 75 years old. I have to look at the map to find the bathroom. I used z390 once, a year or so ago, just to run assemblies. This time I'm going to have to linkedit and run the program. I'm hoping that it'll be easy. I don't want to have to learn another simulator/emulator. To some degree, it's just to keep my mind going. The program I'm writing is also a program that I've thought about for many years, but not having access to a system, I didn't think I'd be able to manage.
I did manage to assemble it, now I need to figure out how to allocate files. And how to associate a file with a DD-name. Also, it doesn't support one of the routines that I used to use. (devtype - that indicates whether there is a dd card.) I tried to join their Q+A board to ask how they do that function on the z390 system.
(did ya check out the video above? only 4 minutes. :-) (I had to look up "used to use" because the grammar sounds okay, but looks silly in writing.)

Concerning geezer's club, I was back in Ct in June for my 75th birthday. Talking to my brother, he said his wife was up in Hartford talking to some octogenarians. I'm thinking, "Oh, that's nice ... WAIT, 5 more years and I'm an octogenarian. ARGH."
Monday, I'm scheduled to go to the medical offices to start memory (think alzheimer's) testing. And I have to bring someone else with me to remember what I forget. There's a 2 hour lecture, then an individual analysis, then another lecture(?) then a 4th lecture to which only the people that accompany the patients/victims are invited. Getin old sux, nutin works like it used to. But now you know why I'm not anxious to have to learn another system.

Good morning. And how are all the Geezers today? Wind at Ft Funston is crappy so I'm not hang gliding.
A year or so ago, I talked to a guy that wanted to do an unusual file compare, where fields had been relocated, and he had a hard time finding bytes that had been changed, but were in different locations. While working on that, I found z390. A few days ago, I got a bug up my butt and worked until 3am on a program that I'd wanted to write, but never got around to. That's why I am where I am today. I am having problems because the emulator doesn't do some things, and does others differently. Not sure what I'll end up doing.
BUT, is this the complaint desk? Occasionally, I do something to add 9 lines, but there's a typo and it tries to add 9 gillion and craps out. Just happened a few minutes ago. Spflite crashed, and I lost what little I'd done. I presume that if I had done more, there would have been some kind of recovery so I wouldn't have lost it all, but I'm not sure.
I think it might be handy to limit adding blank lines to screen size, or 255 ('cause we blame everything on that) or something that is unlikely to cause a problem. (You might consider asking if that was what was meant whenever someone copies, moves, repeats, etc, an unusually large number of lines. Just a thought from my as yet coffee deprived brain.)
Have a good day, Lin

Hi, I guess a limit like that wouldn't be too hard. One new setting( Global? Profile?) and a change in the line command parser should do it.

If the default is 0, then I'll never notice that I should do anything with it. Or, having just talked about it, then forget it by next week. And still be in the same boat that I am.

okay, now I'm not happy. it happened again, and this time, I lost several hours of work. I thought that there was an autosave feature. and I think that there is. but it's not the default.
I have to be out all day tomorrow, and it's way to late now to try to figure out what I lost. ARGH.

a) So I'm using ver 7.0.3217 ('cause I don't use spflite very often). And every time I try to update, I get some other stuff downloaded unintentionally. How much of a problem is that?
b) When I turn autosave on, does it stay on, or do I have to tell it every time?
c) I think I've recovered what I lost. I put off working all day, until about 7pm, because I just wasn't thinking very well. But I think I forgot to save most of the day. I can keep multiple threads in mind, but extraneous stuff gets lost. Tomorrow I go in for the first lecture on altzheimer's. Think good thoughts. :-)
And you better not answer until tomorrow, because you need to take some time off.
d) Just now, I tried to delete 1 line, and it deleted the rest of the file. UNDO worked really well. Thank you. But there was something left over in the sequence field.

One thing to watch out for is PROFILE LOCK. Do a PROF command while in edit on a file and look at the first ==PROF> line. If it starts with PROFILE XXXX LOCK, then the profile is locked, and any changes you make, like setting AUTOSAVE ON will be in effect ONLY FOR THE DURATION OF THAT EDIT SESSION. If you want changes to 'stick' you must issue: PROFILE UNLOCK AUTOSAVE ON PROFILE LOCK And as Robert indicated -- Get to the latest version. And get it directly from www.SPFLite.COM, do NOT get it from places like Download.com, etc. they just LOVE redistributing things with all kinds of 'extra' software that 99% of people would never install on their own. oh. OH. Thank You. Download and install are WONDERFUL. REALLY!!!!!!!! Did the profile autosave on and profile lock. Nice. Easy. Even for this geezer. Did lose the list of files I was editing, but that might be good. Don't think I need to see files I played with a year ago. (if you've nothing to do, how would I delete stuff from the list I didn't want to see?)
Thanks. Did I say the download was WONDERFUL yet? It was. (I keep trying to pitch spflite to all the folks that worked in IT at "the bank" when I see 'em.)

To do cleanup, when you have an FLIST displayed (Like Recent Files) just put an "F" (Forget) in the line command area.
