This had me guessing for a few seconds because retrieved line was blank.
If the user types a very long command in the command line, the line scrolls to the right automatically. If the user then issues RETRIEVE to obtain a previously-issued command, the command line remains 'scrolled' to the right.
As most commands are quite short, this means the command line appears empty because the previous commands are too short to appear in the 'window' of the long scroll. It can also happen that with the retrieved command being 'out of sight', the user enters another command unaware that s/he is merely adding more arguments to a previous command.
I think RETRIEVE (and its related forms) should always reposition the command line so that the retrieve command appears in col 1 (i.e. scroll the command line fully left)
