OK, firstly CASE is not involved in how the data is saved, the only thing affecting that is AUTOCASE. CASE is for treatment of case handling of literals which do not explicitly specify a case operand.
PASTE also will never alter the case, which is what you're seeing.
Not sure about the status bar discrepancy, that will need to be looked at.
So, I've no idea why your file is getting upper cased.
