Hello, I'm not sure if this has been reported before. I was using SPFLite successfully until maybe a year or so ago. At that time I decided to upgrade to a newer version and that's when I encountered this problem. I used to be able to drag and drop text files right over the Desktop icon and SPFLile would open the file, no problem. The same was true when I selected a text file from the file list.
So, after the upgrade, I tried the same things but got nowhere. Looking at the Task Manager, I noticed that SPFLite was looping. Thinking that the latest version (8.2.5103) may have fixed the problem, I installed it, and tried to open text files as before. It is still looping. At this point, I'm not sure what to do. Is this happening because of some software defect or some setting that has to be set to make it work? I've read some of postings in this forum which say that SPFLite has a loop detection mechanism which pops up a warning window. I don't see any such warning. And I'm not doing anything exotic like using macros, etc.
Please help. . Thanks in advance.

Kaveh: Yes, what Robert suggests, might as well test with the latest version, since if the problem still exists, that will be the source level I'll be chasing it in.

Thanks. I'll try your suggestion. Meantime, some time over nigh last night it crashed I couldn't find the crash report in My Documents but I did get a screep snapshot of the crash.. The exception was C0000005 and the back trace was 06 GETINCREMENT 05 LINSERTEMPTY 04 COPYAFILE 03 INITAFILE 02 STABADD 01 LOADTHETEXT 00 PCMDEDIT
I jhope this helps for now. I'll give your "beta" version a spin and let you know if I have the same issue(s).

I found the link to what I think you are referring .. I download the file from there and got SPFLite825160.ex_.. it appears to be a ZIP file but when I open I don't see any install files... Am I on the right track or not. If not, please send me the link that I should be going to. Thanks, Kaveh.

Me again... I'm new to this.. I took copied the download file to the SPFLite directory in Program Files and launched it... Selected a txt file to edit and it went south again.. it is currently looping taking about 25% of my processor.
I hope that, with the information I provided, you have an understanding of this problem.. I haven't seen 5160 crash yet, But if it does, I'll be sure to let you know. BTW.. it is possible (or is it?) that last night's crash was a result of my ending the looping SPFLite process from the Task Manager.

Kaveh: The file you found was correct. Sorry there wasn't additional info about it. We've been posting frequent 'trial' versions trying to track down a real nasty bug and got a bit sloppy. The file is a simple EXE file with the last level altered to EX_. Just rename this to SPFLite.EXE and copy it into your normal install folder. (C:\Program Files\SPFLite or C:\Program Files (x86)\SPFLite) depending on whether you're running on 32 or 64 bit windows.
If you still experience problems, please post your SPFLite.INI file (from \Documents\SPFLite folder) and the xxx.INI file (from the \Documents\SPFLite\Profiles folder) for the type of file you are opening. e.g. TXT.INI for a .TXT file, CPP for a .CPP file, etc.

Hello George. I tried 5160 and had the same problem (looping) and it crashed after several hours with the following
"Untrapped Error #9 (Subscript/pointer out of range) has occurred following execution of XREBUILD"
I'd like to send you the doc you requested. I just don't know how. Is there any way I can attach the files into a post or should I email them to you. Please advise.
Kaveh.

Kaveh: You should be able to simply attach the files to a post here in the forum. Just click on the 'Add Attachment' button in the upper right corner of the Reply box. NOTE: must be a full reply, not the simple quick reply box.
I'm sure there's some really stupid reason we've not thought of for your problem.

Kaveh:
Sorry, I want the files:
\Documents\SPFLite\SPFLite.INI \Documents\SPFLite\Profiles\TXT.INI (if you're failing on editing a .TXT file, else xxx.INI where xxx = the .filetype of the failing edit file)
The crash document is just fine.

Kaveh: Well, you have a TXT.INI profile which has RECFM=F and LRECL=0, so I guess we know what is causing the loop. You couldn't have created this using PROF EDIT TXT since the dialog will simply not allow it. So you must have done it via the command line using LRECL 0 and then ignored the warning message you received about RECFM=F and LRECL=0 being incompatible. The command line method allows the change but warns you.
Solution? Open SPFLite, issue a PROF EDIT TXT command, go to the 2nd tab (File) and set the RECFM/LRECL/EOL etc values to something that more closely resembles what your file actually looks like.

George, thanks for the help. I recreated the TXT.INI file and set it to default (RECFM=U and LRECL=0) and all is now working... I'll be going back to using the official version (5103?) and abandon 5160, for now... I night be tempted to upgrade at some future date.

Kaveh: Glad you're now working. I'd actually recommend staying on the 5160 version, it contains a lot of bug fixes over the 5103 version, there's no reason to expose yourself to all those bugs, it doesn't buy you anything. I hope to have a new official version out sometime in the next few days regardless.
