Hi, Don't know if any of you have ever obtained SPFLite from CNet (DownLoad.com), but if so, be advised that it will no longer be available from that site. For years, the site accepted the standard shareware PAD file as the source for all the program information. You updated the bits of the PAD file for the new version and submitted it to them. But recently they have removed Upload.com (their companion site) which handled the PAD file. Now they want what is basically a Web based email form to be completed where literally EVERYTHING about the product must be manually typed in. Name, Date, version, description, web URL addresses, attached snapshots and icons, cost, licensing, and on and on. Nothing from the previous version is retained, everything must be re-entered. So I told them where they could put their email entry form and withdrew SPFLite from their site. It will still be available from numerous other shareware sites, and most of them don't even need to be informed when I release a new version, they pick up the Pad file automatically from the Pad repository. Still the best site for correctness is www.SPFLite.com. Just a FYI. George

Robert: Well, CNet was the only one that I did manually. Basically, I update the PAD file and publish it and all the other sites that DO carry SPFLite pick it up on their own. So this removes the only manual one I did. It was only posted there years ago because it was considered a 'reputable' download site.

For what its worth - I ALWAYS download from your SPFLITE site.
Call me paranoid, but
(1) I always download software directly from the supplier. I don't trust other sites not to add bloatware to the install package. (2) I figure hackers will be more tempted to hack a download site (with many target packages) than attack your site (with a single package and thus a limited user base).

Stefan: I agree. I really think these shareware sites should just be indexer sites, and provide only a link to the original Home download site.
I've done searches for SPFLite and it finds many download sites which are offering up versions that are WAY out of date as well.

===> I do believe you have your answer, George (just my 2ยข worth - US of course)

I could understand the use of download/mirror sites to provide potentially greater bandwidth or more "local" access. Back in the day when network bandwidth was skinny it could be quite useful to source a package from a more "local" server. But these days, it's just as quick to download from the other side of the planet as using an 'in country' server. As SPFLite is effectively Freeware, why bother with the shareware sites, and lose some control over version/release levels and possibly even content packaging? I guess they provide a level of 'advertising' and potentially some voluntary donations, but is it worth the hassle of publishing new releases to all of them?
Talking of donations.... is the address in the donation section of http://www.SPLFlite.com still correct? If so, I practically drove past your abode in Sept 2019 whilst driving from Toronto to Niagra on the Lake.
I'll be sure to wave next time

Stefan: Yes, we moved to Burlington from Toronto way back in 1972, basically then it was economics, Burlington was cheaper. But Burlington has turned out to be a very nice place to raise a family (although now the youngest is approaching 50).
It's a great location, away from the congestion of Toronto, close to the Niagara peninsula and all the wine country, and not too far for the occasional trip over into the US for a getaway (not that the border has even been open for the last year or so due to Covid).
We've been to the UK lots of times (Linda was born there) and love touring around. Our last trip was down to Cornwall, we rented a cottage near Penzance for a couple weeks and basically hit a different pub every night for dinner. Linda said a cottage was OK, but she wasn't going to cook every night.
If you ever get over here again, we must meet up.
